Designing For Families: Playroom Decorating Ideas

Modern, luxury interior design often revolves around grand rooms, formal dining rooms and magnificent entries, but when you’re designing for a family, a space for kids to play can be quite a luxury for your home. Carve out a space or entire room for kids to be kids, unleash creativity and arrange their toys.

Ample, chic storage for playthings is key in creating a functional, stylish playroom. I created a custom, built-in cabinet for this room (pictured below). The bright, bold storage system tucks all of the stuffed animals and colorful toys away, and the perforated, metal panels on the bottom cabinets provide air flow for audio and video equipment storage.

For the child-size table with chairs, I painted the surface with IdeaPaint. This innovative paint actually transforms any surface into a whiteboard, and it ties perfectly into a playroom so children have a space to draw and be creative. Once they’re done, they can wipe it off and start again.

The playroom also features a transitional-style, upholstered, oversize wing chair so adults can have a stylish and comfortable place to sit, too. Here, I chose a playful zebra pattern that appeals to sophisticated aesthetics and kids alike, but you can also find elegant fabrics just for kids.

Working with the clients and their little one was truly a pleasure, and both their needs and desires were incorporated into the renovation of this room.
